Alexis joined us for a Q&A session, where she spoke about her work with Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia, their Anti-Racist Description Resources, and how this work has impacted her archival practice.
Alexis is the Interim Assistant University Librarian for Special Collections at Princeton University Library where she leads the Archival Description and Processing Team and three curatorial divisions. Previously she worked at Drexel University Libraries and the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library. She has published on web archiving, inclusive description, and the archiving of born-digital audio visual content. Alexis is active in the Society of American Archivists, where she serves as Vice Chair/Chair-Elect for the Acquisitions and Appraisal Section and on the steering committee of the Archival Educators Section.
She is also active in Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia, an informal group of local archivists who work on projects that engage issues at the intersection of the archival profession and the Black Lives Matter movement. She is especially interested in applying user experience research and user-centered design to archival discovery systems, developing and applying inclusive description practices, and web archiving. She holds an M.S.I. in Archives and Records Management from the University of Michigan, a Ph.D. in American History from Brandeis University, and a B.A. in History from Boston College.

Adriana joined us to discuss the process of becoming a certified archivist and ACA, the Academy of Certified Archivists.
Adriana is the Associate Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies, located on the Rutgers University – Newark campus. She received her Master of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005 and Bachelor of Arts in Music History, cum Laude, from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá, Colombia in 2002.
Archives Chat with Graham Patten

Graham discussed the convergence of book conservation and book arts.
Graham Patten currently serves as Assistant Book Conservator at the Northeast Document Conservation Center, which he joined in 2016. Graham earned a Master of Arts, with a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Art Conservation from Buffalo State College. He served as Conservation Fellow at Northwestern University Library from 2014-2016, and completed several conservation internships at major institutions, including the Boston Athenaeum, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, and the Weissman Preservation Center at Harvard University. Graham also has also been a book artist for the past decade, and has had the honor of contributing to local and national bookbinding exhibitions. His work tends to break with the norms and traditions of fine binding and incorporate unique elements of movement and sculpture. He is a member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and a member of the Guild of Book Workers.

Alison discussed the archives at Indiana University South Bend where she is a “lone arranger.” She also discussed a history course she co-teaches where students learn about primary research in the archives.
Alison has been the Campus Archivist since 2004, in addition to Associate Librarian since 2011 of Indiana University South Bend. She was the first archivist the archive had seen in ten years, as well as a “lone arranger.” Alison received her MLIS degree in Archival Administration from Wayne State University in 2002 and a Bachelors in History from Antioch College, Yellow Springs in 1996.

Archives Chat with Michelle Ganz

Michelle joined us to discuss the archival field, building our career, and breaking into the archival world.
Michelle Ganz is the Archives Director for McDonough Innovations where she is creating one of the first Living Archives where William McDonough is being archived as he creates. Prior to working with Mr. McDonough Michelle was the archivist and special collections librarian at The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum of Lincoln Memorial University. Currently Michelle is a member of the SAA Mentoring Subcommittee as well as participating in the program as a mentor; she is a member of the exam development committee for the ACA; is past chair of the Lone Arrangers Section (formerly a roundtable); and has been an active member of the SAA and ACA in a variety of capacities over the last 11 years. Her areas of expertise are: lone arranger, museums, colleges & universities, exhibits both online and physical, manuscripts and rare books, basic conservation and preservation, issues and advocacy, interview and job searching, and general archival/librarian information.
Michelle received her Masters degree from the University of Arizona’s School of Information Resources and Library Science and her Bachelors degree in Medical and 19th century poetry and literature from the Ohio State University.
